September 25, 2009 Meet The 2009/10 Brew City Captains

Time to meet some of the Captains for the 2009-2010 Season of the Brew City Blades:

A Team

Naomi Foucault - Captain

This is my 3rd season with the Brew City Blades, and I'm really looking forward to it.  It's quite an honor to be the Captain of the A team, and I hope I can help lead the team to another championship.
I've been playing hockey since I was 10 years old.  My dad and I formed a girl's high school team back in my home town, which was quite a good time.  After high school I played at the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point for one and 1/2 years.  After college, I took a 7 year break from hockey, until I found the Brew City Blades.  The Blades helped me to fall back in love with the sport I grew up playing.
Through my years of playing, I've learned that it's great to win; but it doesn't mean anything if you're not having fun doing it!

Janea Rowe -  Assistant Captain

Janea Rowe is a 2008 graduate of Northeastern University in Boston, MA.  She has a Bachelors of Science degree in Business Administration and is currently working in the Milwaukee area.  This is Janea's second season with the Brew City Blades, but she has played hockey most of her life.  Janea was Captain and MVP of the Arrowhead High School girls' varsity team and is a lifelong defenseman.  She grew up on skates as her brother and sister have also played hockey for many years.  Janea is competitive and focused on the ice, but more than anything just enjoys the game.

 Sarah Kurth - Assistant Captain

C Team

Tammie Brasfield - Captain

Laurie Harrigan - Assistant Captain

Laurie Harrigan has been playing ice hockey since 1999, the year after the US Women's Team won gold.  "My fellow roller hockey pals were all going to the ice, and im so glad i followed, falling instantly in love with the game".  She started with the Chicago Flash, moved to Milwaukee in 2005, played with Pond Scum for a year, then helped start what is now the Brew City Blades teams.  Treasurer for a year, she is now VP of Metro and balances her passion for the game and organization with that of raising her 2 energetic daughters.  Laurie believes any woman can play and enjoy the sport if she has the desire to develop skills, and contribute to the comaradarie of a positive social atmosphere.

Racheal DeSeombre - Assistant Captain

I started playing hockey in 2002 when Jake invited me to go skating on the lake.  When I showed up with my very prim and proper figure skates he said “Oh no, those won’t do” and we immediately went to Play It Again and I came home with a pair of hockey skates.  I have been hooked ever since.  I started playing with Metro several years ago and hockey has quickly become my favorite pastime.    I believe we should focus on improving both our team play and individual skills.  Moving forward we should appreciate the opportunity we have to play together as we improve our skills.

D Team

Rose Fortier - Captain

Rose Fortier has been playing hockey for three years and likens it to playing chess on a roof in the driving rain, while reshingling the roof and carrying on a conversatin in Russian, which is not her native language. Hockey is a complicated game which takes years to master. So far she has managed to reach the level of mediocre, and plans to improve from there. Her philosophy on hockey is never to give up on a play and to keep going after the puck

Sara Fieder - Assistant Captain

My name is Sara Feider and I have been playing hockey for just over a year. My hockey philosophy is to "play your hardest, but have fun doing it." I enjoy learning new things and helping newer players reach their goals. I am a middle school teacher off of the ice, so I think encouragement comes out during hockey much of the way it does while I teach because I enjoy both things greatly.
I enjoy learning new sports and was very excited when I found out about the Brew City Blades. I've played soccer for over 25 years, and still play, but am happy to finally play hockey since I've wanted to for over 25 years.

One weird side note... I have a pet California Newt named Fig who is 18 years old and I have a Red-Footed Tortoise named Risotto, who is around 9. I also like strange animals, like the echidna in the picture.

Stacy Blasiola - Assistant Captain

Stacy Blasiola began playing hockey in high school for the all women’s team The Rockford Hotwings. After more than a decade off the ice, the desire for a great work out, some friendly competition and the opportunity to gain confidence through accomplishment brought Stacy to the Brew City Blades. Stacy spent the last  half of the 2008-2009 season practicing with the Brew City C Team and joined the team for tournament play in Sun Prairie. She participated in the Spring clinic and played in the Summer League. Most recently, Stacy played on the 2nd place Light the Lamp Tournament Co-Ed team and she is currently participating in Fall clinic.

Stacy has a simple approach to hockey philosophy, “I am a big believer in fundamentals,” she said. “If you want to get better at something you have to start at the beginning. It seems obvious, but it’s easy to want to get ahead of yourself and go faster and harder before you’ve mastered the basics. Doing something right will get you a lot farther, a lot faster than doing something quickly.” She continued, “Personally, after taking more than a decade off, I have found myself back at square one. Focusing on the fundamentals has given me the confidence to grow my skill set. While there is still a long way to go, I have enjoyed the challenges that hockey brings. It is a very rewarding sport on so many levels. Individually, I have gained a lot of confidence from what I’ve learned on the ice. And, of course, the camaraderie of the team is one of the biggest rewards of all.”
