The New Year has started and will surely bring more great things for Metro.
2009 was a year of firsts for Metro.
Arguably, our biggest accomplishment was the Milwaukee area's first all women's amateur hockey tournament. From May 15th-17th over 20 women's hockey teams in four different divisions from near and far came to Milwaukee to participate in the Brew City Showdown. We had a great time hosting these teams and we learned a lot. Planning has already started for this year's tournament which we hope will be bigger and better than last year's.
For the USA Hockey/Labatt Pond Hockey, Metro sent four teams to compete in the two women's divisions of play. Those teams had varying degrees of success, and the Lucky Ducks came away with the championship for their division! This year we are once again sending four teams. The Lucky Ducks will have to defend their title against a host of teams hungry for the success they had last year.
Summer League hockey expanded once again last year. We had enough teams to dedicate the summer season to the NHL's Original Six. Each of the six teams in the Summer League was named after one of those original six NHL hockey teams. This past year, more than ever, the teams were extremely well-matched and some great competition arose from these matchups. Who knows where Summer League will take use this year, but one thing is sure... It will be a great opportunity for fun, competitive hockey.
In regular season play, at the beginning of 2009, the Brew City Blades B Team took home the WCHL white division championship for the second year in a row. This past year also marked the first time there was enough interest to run tryouts to qualify for one of the Blades' teams. This also marked the first time that Metro was able to field three Brew City Blades teams. To begin the 2009-10 WCHL season the Brew City Blades had expanded to include an A Team, a C Team, and a D Team.
There were many other events and accomplishments reached by Metro this past year, too many to mention here. The items mentioned above are simply the highlights. It's obvious that 2009 was a great year for this growing organization. So far 2010 seems to be on track to at least equal the accomplishments of 2009. Keep it tuned to the website to see what happens this year!
