March 23, 2010 C Team wins WCHL blue division championship

The Brew City Blades C Team won the Blue level championship in the WCHL championship tournament. The team failed to make playoffs in the 2008-09 season, but more than made up for it by winning it all in the 2009-10 season.

The WCHL championships were held in Milwaukee on March 12th through the 14th.

The Blades started out the tournament by playing two games on Friday, March 12th.The first game, against the Madison Freeze, ended in a 3-1 victory. The second game that night, against the SMC 9ers also ended in a 3-1 victory for the Blades.

Because of their winning record Friday night, the Blades were given a bye on Saturday.

Sunday's games would prove not to be so easy. The first game against the Sun Prairie Rage ended in a 1-1 tie. The game went to a thrilling shoot out where eight players from each team tried to break the deadlock. Lori Highby, the eighth shooter for the Blades managed to win through and put it in. With this shootout goal, she ensured her team its place in the championship round.

The final game against the Madison Freeze was a thrilling contest in played in front of many appreciative fans, including players from the Brew City Blades A and D Teams. This game was hard fought as well. At the end of regulation, the Freeze and the Blades stood at a 2-2 tie. Neither team was able to gain the upper hand through overtime and once again, the game ended up being decided in a shoot out.

After four other players were unable to finish it off, Lori Highby once more went out and won the shoot out, this time on the fifth try.

The Brew City Blades C Team was able to sew up the 2009-10 WCHL championship for the first time, and they did it in their own inimitable fashion.
