February 23, 2009 Ducks Land Trophy in Pond Hockey Tournament

Metro Milwaukee Women’s Hockey put together four teams for this year’s Labatt Pond Hockey Tournament in Eagle River, WI. In the Women’s Open Division, the Brew City Blades pond team competed heartily. In the Women’s Bronze Division the Lucky Ducks were joined by ABC and Chay’s.

The first games on Friday were a mixed bag, with the Lucky Ducks, Brew City, and Chay’s each coming away with a win. ABC was not able to pull out the win, but gained some valuable experience. The Chay’s women were particularly successful, winning their match 24-5, the highest number of points that any team in both women’s divisions were to receive.

On the second day (Saturday) Brew City came out with two wins, as did the Lucky Ducks and ABC. Chay’s lost a close match, it was hard-fought but they could not come out on top.

Three of the four teams made it to Sunday’s semi-finals. Brew City made it in their division. In the Bronze Division the Lucky Ducks came in first, and Chay’s came in fourth over all, barely edging out ABC.

Sunday dawned cold and crisp. Sadly, both Brew City and Chay’s were not able to make it past their semi-final games, and lost by a slim margin in both games. The Lucky Ducks were able to win their semi-final game, and took on the Checkahoe’s who had just beaten Chay’s.

In an exciting final game the Lucky Ducks came out on top, and were able to uphold Chay’s honor by beating the Checkahoe’s with a final score of 8-4. After three years and a lot of hard work the Ducks were finally able to come away with the trophy.

In all, it was a very successful tournament for Metro. Three out of the four teams that went from the organization made it all the way to the semi-finals, with the fourth team barely missing the cut. Of those teams, the Lucky Ducks were able to emerge triumphant with the trophy.

Next year’s prospects look even brighter…
